Learn about Osgood

Osgood-Schlatter, explained.

Knee pain below the kneecap in growing, active kids — what it is, why young athletes get it, and what to look out for.

What is Osgood-Schlatter?

Osgood-Schlatter is one of the most common causes of knee pain in active kids and teenagers. It affects the area just below the kneecap, where the patellar tendon attaches to a growth area at the top of the shin bone (the tibial tuberosity).

During growth spurts, bones can grow faster than muscles and tendons adapt. Repeated running, jumping and sprinting puts extra pull on that attachment point — which is why it's so common in young athletes.

Who gets it?

It's most often seen in young athletes around 10–15, during growth spurts. It's especially common in sports with lots of running, jumping, landing and changes of direction — basketball, football, netball, athletics, and cricket (particularly bowlers).

Osgood-Schlatter and sport

For young athletes, the hardest part is often the effect on sport. Many want to keep playing, and managing how much training and game time they're doing becomes a big part of the picture.

That's why I Beat Osgood combines guided exercise with sport-load tracking — so athletes and parents can see what's actually happening each week.

When to get it checked

A website can't diagnose knee pain. Have a GP, physiotherapist or sports doctor confirm the diagnosis before starting the program — and see them again if symptoms are significant, unusual or getting worse, for example severe pain, swelling, pain at night, locking, or pain that isn't related to activity.

What age is I Beat Osgood designed for?

Young athletes roughly 10–15 years old. The athlete uses the program on a phone or tablet, with a parent keeping an eye on things.

Does my child need a diagnosis?

Yes. I Beat Osgood is designed for young athletes who have been diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatter, and it can't diagnose knee pain. Before starting, have a GP, physiotherapist or sports doctor confirm the diagnosis and advise whether the activities are suitable for your child. If symptoms are significant, unusual or getting worse, see them again before continuing.

Does my child have to stop playing sport?

Ethan didn't stop all activity. In Weeks 1–2 he kept his sport light and modified — dribbling, shooting and batting practice, no full games — and built up gradually from there. The program tracks sport alongside the routine, and separate Workouts are skipped on full training or game days. Every athlete is different, so talk to a health professional about what's right for your child.

What if symptoms increase?

In the Red Zone (4 or more), skip the Workout and tell a parent, and stop any exercise that makes the knee worse. If pain is persistent, getting worse, unusual or worrying you, seek advice from a GP, physiotherapist or sports doctor. The app records how the knee feels, but it never makes medical decisions.

I Beat Osgood shares Ethan's personal experience and general exercise information. It does not diagnose, treat or cure Osgood-Schlatter and is not a substitute for professional advice. Have a qualified health professional confirm the diagnosis before starting, and seek their advice where symptoms are significant, persistent, unusual or worsening, or before returning to full sport.
